Supermicro Backplanes - Expanders vs Direct Connections

Then I retract my objections and wish you the best of luck! :)

Supermicro Backplanes - Expanders vs Direct Connections

I believe you will run into issues with that backplane.

Supermicro Backplanes - Expanders vs Direct Connections

When it comes to supermicro chassis with SAS1 expanders there is a known issue with drives larger than or equal to 3TB. To alleviate this ensure that either the backplane uses sata connectors or that it is SAS2. The easiest way to figure this out is to check the parts list on any chassis you are...

3U SGI Rackable SE3016 Replacement Unit

Any supermicro sc836 should get the job done, but be wary of those with SAS1 backplanes if you are using drives > 2TB as they have issues. MrRackables on ebay sells a lot of supermicro chassis and he does a very good job of listing in the description whether or not there will be issues with...

    reserved ssd space?

Whether or not you want to over provision more depends on the workload and your desired performance level. Is this in a desktop used for everyday stuff? Then probably not. If it's under a sustained heavy write workload then you will definitely see improved write performance. As an example of...

Intel Skylake Xeon E3-1200v5 CPUs in stock at Newegg and Provantage

Yep, I was basically visiting their site every morning until I saw the X11 boards appear. Two models were already out of stock! So I quickly snagged two X11SSH-F's and called it a day. I picked up four sticks of SK HYNIX 16GB PC4-2133P DDR4 REG-ECC DIMM HMA42GR7MFR4N-TF T1 AA I'll pick up...

ZFS: 120GB SSD for L2ARC or ZIL?

If by ZIL you really meant SLOG then I agree entirely.

Intel Skylake Xeon E3-1200v5 CPUs in stock at Newegg and Provantage

I'm pretty excited. I've got 2 1260L's and two X11SSH's on the way.

ZFS: 120GB SSD for L2ARC or ZIL?

Well in all fairness OP did mention NFS, which is one of the more clear cut cases for a SLOG. But generally I agree that the need for a SLOG or L2ARC is usually the exception rather than the rule for simple home systems.

    LSI2008 and Raid-5

In my experience the trick to getting things cheap is to find the OEM equivalents and search for those. An LSI 9211-8i from newegg might run you $400 (no idea, just guessing) but an IBM ServeRAID M1115 on ebay (used) will cost $100. Hell, I got both of mine new from amazon for $90 each but I got...

    LSI2008 and Raid-5

As others have pointed out the lack of memory on the sas2008 is the main (perhaps only?) culprit for suboptimal raid5. If you want something inexpensive that should perform well for raid5 then perhaps a sas2108 card would be more ideal. You can find OEM versions from server pulls on ebay quite...

Microcenter AMD Phenom II bundles /w Free Motherboard.

For what its worth you aren't limited to the motherboards on that combo page. As long as you get one of the processors in question you can get any AMD motherboard in the store and they'll knock $40 off the price. And, as of the last time I was in there, it stacked with any rebates on the board too.
