I have a Dell D620 Laptop and it would not let me go above 1024 either but this fixed my problem! Im still a newb as well but in my Linux class@school we use opensuse as well. I run Ubuntu on my laptop and like it a little more than opensuse.

My very first home LAN I just used a basic Linksys 8 Port switch, they are very easy to find on ebay and very cheap. I bet a used one would be fine as well.
